An Abundance of Bread and the Creative Mind

Creativity in cooking extends beyond crafting new recipes; it involves making the most of ingredients and reducing waste. Adopting a non-wasteful mindset can result in tasty meals while being mindful and creative. There is always an abundance of bread products at HL, so we decided to share some ideas to inspire ways to use it -beyond the usual toast or sandwich.


Reducing Food Waste

Food waste is a major global issue, contributing to environmental challenges and economic losses. It's becoming expensive to afford the basics these days...and bread is no longer a cheap staple. Trying new recipes, and using leftover ingredients can help diminish waste, and save money. Consider some of the ideas listed below, and try something new and tasty. There are lots of recipes available online if you need further direction...



10 Ways to Use an Abundance of Bread

  1. Croutons: Cut bread into cubes, season, and bake until crispy for salads and soups.

  2. Breadcrumbs: Process stale bread into crumbs for use in coatings, meatballs, burgers, or as a topping.

  3. Stuffing: Simple ingredients like broth, vegetables, spices added to cubed stale bread can make any holiday dinner a success. We'll be posting a simple recipe soon.

  4. Bruschetta: Toast slices of bread and top with a mixture of tomatoes, garlic, basil, and olive oil. You can add cheese and make it as tasty or basic as you like.

  5. Garlic Bread: Spread a mixture of butter, garlic, and parsley on sliced bread and toast until golden. You can pre-pare this and freeze to bake later.

  6. Bread Pudding: Combine stale bread with milk, eggs, sugar, and spices, then bake for a sweet dessert. Add fruits and other flavours. Yum!

  7. French Toast: Dip slices of bread in a mixture of eggs and milk, then cook on a skillet for a delicious breakfast. Try using raisin bread and cinnamon, or making a baked french toast casserole..so easy!

  8. Breakfast Bake: Layer bread with eggs, cheese, and vegetables, then bake for a hearty morning dish.

  9. Strata: Similar to a breakfast bake, this savory dish layers bread with eggs and fillings like cheese and meats.

  10. Freeze for Later: Bread going stale? Freeze it for future use to prevent waste.
